There is no question that the larger avenues of literacy are happening through keyboards and monitors. A contemporary English teacher is obligated to work from and for a technological medium, as the applications of writing and reading for our students will predominantly occur online. Many students who might happen to be technology-poor are still savvy by way of the osmosis of technology shared by their friends; this I watch all of the time. I’m suddenly struck by how seductive writing might be in a computer lab, certain that the frameworks for ELA would have much greater appeal to postmodern kids if delivered more often through blogs, online chat and google docs.
